About Me
I’m Mário, a Software Engineer with 5+ years of experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable web platforms, and, since 2026, a Master in Informatics (Software Engineering) from Universidade Eduardo Mondlane.
I build software for a specific reality: one where bandwidth is expensive, infrastructure is uneven, and specialists are scarce. That constraint isn’t a limitation to me — it’s the design brief.
What I Do
I design, build, and maintain production systems end to end. My expertise includes Python, PHP, and JavaScript, along with frameworks such as Django, Laravel, and ReactJS.
I specialize in:
- Writing clean, maintainable, and scalable code
- Building user-centric applications that deliver real-world impact
- API design and integration for seamless communication between systems
- Database design and management
- Utilizing Ubuntu Server and Nginx to deploy and support web applications
Research
My master’s research asked a question rooted in the Mozambican context: can we detect skin cancer using only the clinical data a health professional already records during a routine consultation — no dermatoscope, no camera, no specialized hardware?
Most AI diagnostic models in the literature depend on high-resolution imagery that the majority of our health units simply don’t have. So I built and validated an alternative.
The result was a Random Forest classifier reaching 99.3% sensitivity on an independent test set — detecting 296 of 298 malignant lesions using structured clinical variables alone.
Because the dataset contained multiple lesions per patient, the train/test split was performed at patient level to prevent data leakage — ensuring the model learned the disease rather than recognising individual patients. Generalization was then confirmed through formal statistical testing.
What Drives Me
Technology earns its value when it reaches the people who need it most. That’s why I care about inclusive design and accessibility, and why my research targets low-resource settings rather than well-funded ones.
I also write. My blog covers software architecture, API design, and cybersecurity — properly researched and referenced, because technical writing deserves the same rigour as technical work.
Open to: software engineering roles, applied ML and research collaborations, university teaching, and technical writing.
